Tips on How to Buy a Vintage Wedding Dress

A vintage wedding gown is timeless and if you’re a bride on a budget, you can surely find that perfect dress at a price that fits.  The price of vintage wedding dresses often ranges from $200 to $600 or slightly higher, depending on the seller.

Typically, you don’t need to spend more than $1,000 for a beautiful dress that you can wear on that most special day.  How can you find the right vintage wedding dress?  Here are some tips:

Scout vintage shops online.  Etsy is a good place to shop for vintage items, including wedding dresses.  You can look for sellers that are based in your location or in a nearby State to save on shipping costs.  Don’t forget to read the seller’s policy on Shipping, Returns and Exchange.

Check for damages. When shopping for vintage items, it’s very important to have a keen eye for unsightly damages such as tears, discolorations, molds and stains.  If you are buying online, make sure that the seller is honest enough to point out the specific flaws on the item description.

Does it fit?  Whenever possible, it’s best to try on the dress to make sure that you will feel comfortable and beautiful wearing it.  However, if you are buying from an online store, the measurements are often listed so you will need to compare it with your body measurements.  If you can’t try on the dress, opt for a style that would be flattering for your body shape.  Also, make sure that the dress will allow you to make minor alterations if needed.

Know the difference between authentic vintage and reproductions. Some shops sell vintage-inspired wedding gowns that are made out of vintage materials. Other shops such as Unique Vintage, sells both vintage reproductions and authentic vintage wedding dresses.  Whether you choose to buy true blue vintage or vintage-inspired,  you should be aware of what you’re paying for.
